Infiltration of Social Media

Russian Trolls Infiltrate Social Media!

What are they?

No matter what social media platform you choose to be active on, you are at risk of becoming a victim of "Russian media trolls". These trolls typically target members of popular social media websites like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. They usually try to influence the people on these sites to have a certain mindset about a variety of subjects, including political elections and important votes. By targeting specific groups of people with particular interests, they can issue advertisements that pertain to that group and are more likely to be agreeable with their views. The victims of these trolls usually don't realize they are being influenced at all, as these messages are usually subliminal. However, they can change people's views to prefer a certain political party during an election, or vote for or against a new bill, or support or denounce a new social movement.

How are you a possible target?

These social media trolls can target you almost directly, by using information about you such as where you live, your interests, your age, and other personal information. Even if you don't care much about politics, you can still be directly targeted based on where you live, such as if you are in a state where certain political opinions are very strong. If you have certain interests that you make public on your page at any point, they can be used to target you for certain waves of advertisements or spam. Your age group is also a major factor. Basically, any time you spend on social media, you are putting yourself at risk of being a target of these trolls.
